Allegations Emerge Amid Congressional Debate

New York Congressman Faces Misdemeanor Charge

New York Congressman Jamaal Bowman has been accused of pulling a fire alarm in a U.S. House of Representatives office building on September 30, 2023. The incident occurred as Congress debated a potential government shutdown.

Bowman, 46, is a former middle school principal who was elected to Congress in 2020. He is a member of the House Education and Labor Committee and the House Judiciary Committee.

According to police, Bowman allegedly pulled the fire alarm in the Longworth House Office Building at approximately 11:30 a.m. The alarm caused the building to be evacuated, and the Capitol Police responded to the scene.

Bowman has been charged with one count of misdemeanor destruction of property. He is scheduled to appear in court on October 10, 2023.

Bowman's office has not yet commented on the allegations.
